The jewels mainly worn by women to attract the opposite sex included Aphrodite, the goddess of love, Eros or symbolic animals like her attribute, the dove. \r\nHere the gold dove is coloured with enamel and a garnet. Colour became an important aspect of Greek jewellery by the Hellenistic period (323-27 BC).\r\nThis type of earring with a dove is common at the end of the Hellenistic period and can still be found during the Roman times.","physicalDescription":"Pair of earrings, gold set with garnets hung with doves decorated with filigree and enamel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"filigree","id":"x35885"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, with filigree, enamel and garnet","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Hellenistic","id":"AAT20101"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AC6360","2006AC6421"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"C","box":"1"},{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"C","box":"1"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Earring","id":""}],[{"text":"Earring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Greece","id":"x28895"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"200 BC-100 BC","earliest":"-0200-01-01","latest":"-0100-01-01"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of earrings, gold set with garnets hung with doves decorated with filigree and enamel, Greece, 200-100 BC.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Found on the island of Milos, Aegean Sea","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"doves","id":"x30126"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["7-1874","7A-1874"],"accessionNumberNum":"7","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1874,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Earring [1]","Earring [2]"],"assets":["2016JP9827","2016JR0326","2019LN6386","2019LN4340","2019LT7078","2019LT6025","2019LX0021","2019LW6673"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-20","availableToBook":false}}
