The original Shaftesbury Theatre, which was located at 126 Shaftesbury Avenue where the Soho Fire Station is currently based, was destroyed by German bombs on 17 April 1941. As the building was irreparable, the name was given to the old Prince's Theatre instead. The new Shaftesbury Theatre has staged productions such as Follies, Hairspray: The Musical and & Juliet. The building was designed by notable theatre architect Bertie Crew.","physicalDescription":"Fragment of a shell casing from a German bomb","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"War","id":"THES257202"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MK6780"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES355504"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"shell casing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1944","earliest":"1939-01-01","latest":"1948-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Richard V Hughes Bequest.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"195","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"90.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"75","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The bomb shell was on display in the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden as part of a display on Wartime Theatre.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fragment of a shell casing from a German bomb (probably an incendiary device) which fell on the Prince's Theatre, 1944","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.3276-1994"],"accessionNumberNum":"3276","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":1994,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2009-07-01","availableToBook":true}}
