Cochran's spectacular revue <i>The League of Notions</i>, described as 'An Inconsequential Process of Music, Dance and Dramatic Interlude' from the book and lyrics by John Murray Anderson with music by Augustus Barratt, that opened at London's New Oxford Theatre on the 17th January 1921.\r\n\r\nThis was Cochran's inaugural production at the New Oxford Theatre, built on the site of Charles Morton's original Oxford Music Hall that had opened in Oxford Street on 19th March 1861. Destroyed by fire on 11th February 1868, its replacement was partially destroyed by a subsequent fire on 1 November 1871 but rebuilt on an extended site and opened on 17th March 1873. That building was closed on the 4th June 1892 when it was considered too old-fashioned and was reopened on 31st January1893. C.B. Cochran took over the theatre in 1917 by which time the heyday of Music Hall and Variety was over, and after closure in 1920 and remodelling which was complete in time for the opening of The League of Notions, it was officially known as The New Oxford Theatre.\r\n\r\n<i>The League of Notions</i> starred Jennie and Rosie Dolly, the beautiful singing and dancing Dolly Sisters; sets and spectacular costumes designed by James Reynolds, including the Dolly Sisters' wonderful pearl costumes; a Pierrot, Harlequin and Columbine in the prologue, and ‘an Episode’ featuring masks by W.J. Benda, one worn by Grace Cristie inspired by a Javanese Devil Mask. Reviewing the production in The Observer, 23 January 1921, St. John Ervine declared it a 'series of disconnected \"turns\" of varying merit, all of which are set in scenes of extraordinary loveliness', and called it 'an evening of sheer loveliness... the finest show in town.'  He complimented its director John Murray Anderson fulsomely but had faint praise for The Dolly Sisters who though he conceded worked hard and were charming and shapely, failed to enthrall him.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Souvenir wood frame tambourine with a printed tin skin advertising the C.B.
