Rival theatres in Edo (present-day Tokyo) put on the same play in competition, but with different titles, in the first month of 1829. Here, the artist pictures the actors from the rival productions as if they are playing opposite one another. \r\n\r\nImages of kabuki actors are an important genre within Japanese woodblock prints. Both kabuki theatre and woodblock prints flourished in the Edo period (1615-1868), products of the increasingly vibrant urban cultures of Edo, Kyoto and Osaka.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shunpu (Hokumyô)","id":"A17238"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Tenmaya Kihei","id":"A17239"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Izutsuya Denbei","id":"A17240"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodblock print","id":"x38448"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour print from wood blocks, with metallic pigment and embossing","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2013GC5507","2013GC5886","2013GC7914","2006BA1183","2010EK9433","2010EK9434","2010EK9435"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES394051"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1829","earliest":"1829-01-01","latest":"1829-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Koban","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signature: Shunpu ga","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Picture by Shunpu","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from John Sparks, accessioned in 1898.
