He roughed it out with a claw chisel. This left distinctive clusters of parallel grooves, which you can still feel at the bottom by the owl’s right foot. He then used various sizes of flat chisel on their edge to cut in fine detail such as the feathers. To create areas of dark shadow, he used a drill. On the left leg, just below the feathers, there are two drill holes. There is a another large one under the left wing.\r\n\r\nGeorge Gammon Adams (b. 1821-1898) was a portrait sculptor and medallist. He designed and exhibited prize medals for the Great Exhibition. In 1852 he was chosen to model the death mask of Wellington. One of his public monuments is the 'Napier' statue in Trafalgar square.\r\n\r\nThe bust was among the items given to the Museum by I. D. Adams, the daughter of George Gammon Adams, in 1980. In total, 196 items were included in the Adams gift, which consisted of many models for medals as well as the busts and figurative sculpture. In most instances it is not possible to date conclusively the many models included in this gift.","physicalDescription":"Owl with beak open stands on a rocky base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Adams, George Gammon","id":"A3907"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Marble","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2112","2006AE3930","2006AM7058"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111 (VA)","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"DU1","shelf":"EXP","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850 - 1898","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1898-12-31"},"association":{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss I.
