Tadanobu is a fox who becomes a human in order to be close to his parents, and it requires the actor to alternate between the human and fox roles. It became one of Tsurusuke's most well-known roles. \r\n\r\nIn this <i>surimono</i>, or print commemorating a poetry gathering, Tsurusuke is pictured in human form but in a fox-like pose. To his left are poems by members of the Jukôdô poetry group. The one to the far left is by Tsurusuke himself, under his pen name Shishô. \r\n\r\nBoth kabuki theatre and woodblock prints flourished in the Edo period (1615-1868). They were products of and contributors to the increasingly vibrant urban cultures of Edo (present-day Tokyo), Kyoto and Osaka. Kabuki actors were hero worshipped by all levels of society, and often participated in wider cultural activities than just the theatre, for example poetry salons, as seen in this print.","physicalDescription":"Japanese woodblock print, surimono","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Umekuni","id":"A17242"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodblock print","id":"x38448"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour print from wood blocks, with metallic pigment","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo period","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2013GD9472","2013GC5883","2010EK8757"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES394051"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Osaka","id":"x32812"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1824","earliest":"1824-01-01","latest":"1824-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signature: Umekuni","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Purchased from John Sparks, accessioned in 1898.
