The sophisticated lustre technique had been transmitted to Italy from Spain, where it had been brought by Muslim craftsmen from the Middle East. A continuing link with the Middle East is shown by the subject matter of the decoration. The turbaned man portrayed here has been identified as the Ottoman sultan Mehmet II (1451-1481). Italians and other Europeans took a practical interest in their powerful Ottoman neighbours, and many portraits of the sultans appeared in prints, oil paintings, and other media.","physicalDescription":"Tazza of earthenware with an opaque glaze and lustre decoration. With a bust portrait of possibly the Sultan Mohomet II. The portrait is painted in blue outline against a ground partly shaded in blue, within a border of flowers and foliage on a continuous scrolled stem. In front of the bust is a floral spray. The turban and flowered robe are coloured in lustre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"lustre-painted","id":"x36217"},{"text":"tin glazing","id":"x36216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tin-glazed earthenware with lustre decoration, painted","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2007BM2232","2006BB4251","2015HM3075","2017JW2954"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"38","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tazza","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Deruta","id":"x35295"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1500-40","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1540-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by George Salting, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tazza of earthenware with an opaque glaze and lustre decoration, probably Deruta, ca. 1500-40","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Tim Stanley (ed.), with Mariam Rosser-Owen and Stephen Vernoit, <i>Palace and Mosque: Islamic Art from the Middle East</i>, London, V&A Publications, 2004","id":"AUTH351313"},"details":"p.123, plate 143","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"p. 175","free":"Born, Robert., Michał, Dziewulski., and Messling, Guido (introduction). <u>L’Empire Du Sultan: Le Monde Ottoman Dans L’Art De La Renaissance</u>.
