The pair was transferred to the South Kensington Museum, later renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1870, with the bulk of the collection.\r\nThe ear ornaments are made of small \"cut work\" studs set onto plain or twisted wires, to which small flat discs have been applied. The style is thought to have been copied from Indian jewellers who saw English cut steel jewellery in black and white engraved illustrations to English jewellers' catalogues. Gold is traditionally the material of choice for jewellery in India, for those who can afford it.","physicalDescription":"A pair of earrings of gold 'cutwork' studs set onto plain or twisted wire, with applied small flat discs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2006AV2268","2006AY3676","2006AV2230"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"5L","id":"THES394971"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"5L","id":"THES394971"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Earring","id":""}],[{"text":"Earring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Calcutta","id":"x32018"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Probably in the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1855\r\nTransferred from the Indian Museum.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A pair of earrings, Calcutta, c.1850.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Susan Stronge, Nima Smith, and J.C.
