It is a portrait of the thinker Desiderius Erasmus (ca.1466–1536), perhaps the most important European humanist and scholar of that period. The portrait is set in a suitably serious environment, underlining his importance, showing him deep in thought. \r\n\r\nErasmus gained a Catholic education, but instead of entering a monastery he travelled, writing critical texts about the Catholic church. His thinking laid the foundations for the Reformation in 16th-century Europe.","physicalDescription":"Portrait of Erasmus standing under a decorated archway with a statue in front of him","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Holbein, Hans (II)","id":"A8516"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Lützelburger, (Franck) Hans","id":"A14384"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"x30813"},"note":"formerly attributed to"},{"name":{"text":"Specklin, Viet Rudloph","id":"AUTH330216"},"association":{"text":"block cutter","id":"x44918"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood engraving on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BA0690","2011FB6877"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"29","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Basel","id":"x40973"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1538","earliest":"1533-01-01","latest":"1542-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.125","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Coporio Effiguri xx Erasmi","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Portrait of Desiderius Erasmus, after Hans Holbein the Younger","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hollstein, vol.
