It was revived in Europe during the Renaissance, and again in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cameos and intaglios were prized and collected, sometimes as symbols of power and mounted in jewelled settings, sometimes as small objects for private devotion or enjoyment. Carving in lapis lazuli was fashionable around 1600 in Italy and Bohemia, especially at the imperial court of Rudolf II in Prague. The pair to this cameo is also in the Museum's collections (see inv.no. A.85-1918).","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lapis lazuli","id":"AAT11122"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lapis lazuli, in silver-gilt mount","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE9321"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA9","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cameo Adam and Eve","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1580-1600","earliest":"1580-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Alfred Jones","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Adam and Eve, cameo in lapis lazuli, Italy, ca. 1580-1600","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Adam","id":"N4430"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.84-1918"],"accessionNumberNum":"84","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1918,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2016JF6538","2019LN2665","2019LR0462","2019LV6011"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-14","availableToBook":false}}
