It was revived in Europe during the Renaissance, and again in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cameos and intaglios were prized and collected, sometimes as symbols of power and mounted. This cameo once belonged to the 2nd Earl of Arundel, who assembled a famous gem cabinet in the 1630s. Later it became the property of the 4th Duke of Marlborough (1739–1817), owner of the greatest private gem collection ever formed in Britain. It included over 700 gems, about 230 of them from the Arundel collection.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sardonyx","id":"AAT11137"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sardonyx (layered agate), in later gold setting","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE9188"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA9","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cameo","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1575-1600","earliest":"1575-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr W.
