It was revived in Europe during the Renaissance, and again in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cameos and intaglios were prized and collected, sometimes as symbols of power and mounted in jewelled settings, sometimes as small objects for private devotion or enjoyment. Francis I, King of France from 1515 to 1547,was an important patron of the arts. This portrait may be the work of Matteo del Nassaro, a Veronese gem engraver and medallist who worked mainly in France and introduced the techniques of the Italian gem engravers to the French court.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nassaro, Matteo del","id":"A14379"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"agate","id":"AAT11135"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Agate, set in a later gold ring","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"CA9","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cameo","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1520-1545","earliest":"1520-01-01","latest":"1545-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Francis I, agate cameo, probably by Matteo del Nassaro, France, 1520-45","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.8-1936"],"accessionNumberNum":"8","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1936,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LP9909","2019LP1469","2019LW7725"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-14","availableToBook":false}}
