Sometimes the granulation on Etruscan jewellery is so fine that it resembles gold powder, and working with it must have required consummate skill. The coils of wire and tiny gold petals must have shimmered and gleamed as the wearer moved her head.\r\n19th century jewellers were  fascinated to know how the Etruscan goldsmiths created patterns composed of wires and grains applied without any sign of solder.  In 1884 the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann described granulation, the application of small, sometimes minute, gold grains, as an ‘art which now baffles the comprehension of the most skilful of the skilful’.  \r\nTo the naked eye,19th century granulation magnificently emulates Etruscan work.  However, high magnification shows that solder continued to be used, even in the workshop of Alessandro Castellani, who ‘after long and assiduous labor’ claimed to have re-discovered the ancient methods.","physicalDescription":"Pair of rosettes, gold with filigree.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Filigree","id":"x35885"},{"text":"Embossing","id":"AAT53826"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold with filigree","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Etruscan","id":"AAT20471"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AC7258","2006AC7306","2006AC7264","2006AC7263"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"B","box":"7"},{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"B","box":"7"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Rosette","id":""}],[{"text":"Rosette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tuscany","id":"x29374"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"500-400 BC","earliest":"-0400-01-01","latest":"0500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pair of rosettes, gold with filigree, Etruscan, 500-400 BC","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"rosette","id":"AAT9972"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["3345-1856","3345PART-1856"],"accessionNumberNum":"3345","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1856,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Rosette [1]","Rosette [2]"],"assets":["2019LR0172","2019LR4562","2019LT4023","2019LT3357","2019LX0642","2019LW1652","2020MN9718","2020MN9719"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2005-04-11","availableToBook":false}}
