Like many other Arts and Crafts designers, including C.R. Ashbee, Wilson trained originally as an architect. He became interested in metals in the early 1890s, and went on to teach at the Royal College of Art, publishing a practical manual <i>Silverwork and Jewellery</i> in 1903.\r\n\r\nIn the preface to the manual he encouraged the student to 'feed his imagination on old work' and his own attraction to historical themes can be seen in this clasp, which features the mythological figure of Cupid as its central motif.","physicalDescription":"Cloak clasp, silver, rock crystal, half-pearls and opals, set with roundels of cloisonné enamel representing the infant Cupid and flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wilson, Henry","id":"A6194"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Wilson, Henry","id":"A6194"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":"workshop of, probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"quartz crystal","id":"AAT11152"},{"text":"pearl","id":"AAT11827"},{"text":"opal","id":"AAT11129"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},{"text":"plique-à-jour","id":"AAT53785"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, cloisonné enamel, rock crystal, half-pearls opals","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AX8828","2006AX8775"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"D","box":"2"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cloak clasp","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1903","earliest":"1898-01-01","latest":"1907-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Probably made in Henry Wilson's London workshop.
