Yûgiri was a famous courtesan in the licensed prostitution area of Shinmachi in Osaka. Her love affair with Fujiya Izaemon, from a rich Osaka family, became a popular theme in kabuki theatre and is still performed today. \r\n\r\nImages of kabuki actors are an important genre within Japanese wood-block prints.
