Pressed flowers are commonplace in such albums but seaweeds are more unusual. It reflects the interest in amateur botany that developed in the 19th century amongst women and children, and gives us a view of 19th century leisure pursuits and domestic pastimes. This scrapbook is also of interest in relation to the cyanotypes of algae and other plants by Anna Atkins, and the practice of illustrating botanical books on ferns, grasses, mosses, seaweeds with real pressed specimens rather in the manner of a herbarium.","physicalDescription":"Scrapbook of 26 pages bound in pale purple cloth covered in boards.
