Trevelyan was a painter, and was strongly associated with Surrealism in Britain, with his work often having a childlike quality.  Zika Ascher commissioned designs by artists such as Trevelyan after feeling frustrated by the somewhat dull textiles produced during the Second World War.  Along with Alastair Morton of Edinburgh Weavers, Ascher began the practice of working with artists in 1944 to produce innovative textile designs.  Ascher fabrics were printed in their workshop in London by screen, and occasionally block printing, initially on rayon but later on silk and cotton.  Dress fabrics from Ascher were very popular with French, British and Italian couturiers in the 1940s, including Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaperelli.","physicalDescription":"Dress fabric of screen-printed spun rayon.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Julian Trevelyan","id":"A15240"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ascher Ltd","id":"A13990"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"rayon","id":"AAT14059"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printed","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen-printed rayon","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AP6430"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES307718"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress fabric","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1946","earliest":"1946-01-01","latest":"1946-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the manufacturer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"25","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dress fabric of screen-printed spun rayon, designed by Julian Trevelyan for Ascher Ltd., London, 1946","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Illlustrated in Christine Bodyell, <i>Horrockses' Fashions: Off-the-Peg Style in the '40s and '50s </i>(London: V&A Publishing, 2010), p. 93, pl. 2.46."}],"production":"Reason For Production: Retail","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.95B-1947"],"accessionNumberNum":"95","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1947,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-09","recordCreationDate":"2005-03-31","availableToBook":true}}
