He had bought it from Spink & Son in 1954, the invoice from Spink stating that it was from the 'Yuan Ming Yuan, Pekin, 1860'. This refers to the imperial summer palace retreat Yuanming Yuan, located north of Beijing, which was plundered and destroyed by British and French troops during the Second Opium War in 1860. Spink had bought the vase in 1953 from the Sotheby’s sale of the collection of Robert Bruce (1898-1953). Bruce had inherited his collection from his great uncle Sir Frederick Bruce (1814-67) who was British Ambassador in Beijing in 1860-64. Sir Fredrick was the brother of James Bruce, Earl of Elgin, who, as ambassador extraordinary in China had ordered the destruction of the Yuanming Yuan.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase, carved from greyish blue jade, China, 18th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.25-1958","A.25A-1958"],"accessionNumberNum":"25","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1958,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Vase","Stand"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-11","recordCreationDate":"2005-03-31","availableToBook":false}}
