To ensure the multi-colour blocks registered with the ‘key’ image, he printed an impression from the key block onto the others to guide his cutting; the image is visible in the uncut areas of the blocks. Bawden applied more than one colour to these blocks in sequence, printing, for example, blue over red, brown over green, red over purple.
