Features hatched and stippled in brown and sanguine, with some black in the eyes and with white heightening, on a very pale carnation ground; hair in pale brown wash, freely hatched and stippled in darker colour and heightened with gouache over the carnation; costume and armour in gouache with gold for the lights on the armour; cravat in pale brown wash modelled with white; background a brown wash worked over with darker colour; on vellum put down on pasteboard. \n\n<u>Frame:</u> Seventeenth-century gold oval locket with shallowly convex back, the inside of which is enamelled in blue; the sides with a central channel, flaring out to the bezel, which holds the convex glass by its rounded edge; the hanger of D-section grooved down the middle, bifurcating into wire of flat section, which bends back on itself in single loops before beginning tapering spirals of four turns (damaged at the small ends); engraved on the back beneath the loops with acanthus leafage, sprigs and scrolls.
