This was a vast visual encyclopaedia of the ancient and natural worlds, consisting of thousands of drawings and prints. Of roughly 7000 surviving drawings from the Paper Museum, around 2500 are of natural history subjects, including fruit and plants. \r\n\r\nCassiano was a member of Europe's first modern scientific academy, the prestigious Accademia dei Lincei, established in Rome in 1603 - half a century before either the Royal Society in London or the Académie des Sciences in Paris. The Accademia, which numbered Galileo amongst its members, placed great emphasis on observation as the key to unravelling the mysteries of nature. \r\n\r\nFor his Paper Museum Cassiano commissioned artists to make drawings directly from specimens; the resulting works were intended to be clear and objective scientific records. Little is known about these artists, due to the documentary bias of the visual encyclopaedia. However, many of the drawings are attributed on stylistic grounds to Vincenzo Leonardi, who was often employed by Cassiano.","physicalDescription":"Botanical drawing of the day lily, depicting a green stalk with thin green leaves growing up the length of it, and flowers at the top. One flower is shown in bloom, one unopened, and two with only the stamen and stigma left. They are orange in colour, featuring six petals and long stamen in the middle. On the right of the flower is an image of the bulb, white in colour with a stalk growing from the top.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil (marking material)","id":"THES398741"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour","categories":[{"text":"Gardens & Gardening","id":"THES49002"},{"text":"Health","id":"THES48942"},{"text":"Botanical art","id":"THES277744"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BF2743","2012FE4884"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"DP","shelf":"112","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolours","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1600-1700","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"14 3/4","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"10 1/2","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from 1949 departmental register","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed in ink with title and descriptive botanical notes in Italian."},{"content":"384","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Numbered in ink at the bottom of the plant stem"}],"objectHistory":"From Cassiano dal Pozzo's 'paper museum', a vast visual encyclopedia consisting of drawings and prints. This drawing belongs to a group of five purchased by the V&A Museum in 1949 from Mrs de Beer. These drawings '...were dispersed from the Royal Library early this century... All these drawings are laid down onto 18th-century paper, and are framed by the typical wash border used by George III's Librarian for many of the drawings...' (information provided by Mrs Henrietta Ryan, Deputy Curator of the Print Room, The Royal Library, Windsor Castle).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Anonymous: The Day Lily (Hyacintus Poeticus) and its bulb; Italian; 17th century; pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, from the 'Paper Museum' of Cassiano dal Pozzo","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Prints and Drawings and Department of Paintings, Accessions 1949</u>, London: HMSO, 1961."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"lily","id":"x43964"},{"text":"plant","id":"AAT132360"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Unknown artist\r\nDay Lily (Hyacintus poeticus)\r\n1600-1700\r\n\r\nThe roots and underground parts of plants were often of medical value to the herbalist and apothecary.
