Day had become well-known for her imaginative and original patterns after the success of her design ‘Calyx’ (Museum no. CIRC.211-1954) at the Festival of Britain in 1951, which was also manufactured by Heal’s. Day became Britain’s most successful pattern designer of the 1950s, collaborating with a range of firms, producing textiles to ceramics. Lively patterns became a feature of Day’s work, and were inspired by the work of abstract artists like Paul Klee and Joan Miro, and she sought to create a similar energy with her prints.","physicalDescription":"Screen printed linen.
