The anteroom of the drawing room, which was acquired by the V&A just before the house was demolished, reflects the mixed classical and Gothic elements of the Aesthetic style. It is richly decorated with inlaid, painted and gilded wood. The room was used to display Kenrick’s collection of blue and white ceramics.","physicalDescription":"The whole room, with the exception of the marble fireplace, is panelled in sycamore and oak, with inlay of walnut and other woods. By 1851 Samuel was a \"carver in wood\" and was living alone at 4 Carlisle Street (just off Soho Square), Westminster. Perhaps he moved to the city to gain work or maybe to train in the art of carving. By 1861 Samuel was listed in the census as a \"wood and stone carver\" employing 5 men and 2 boys' and living at 19 Welford Road, Leicester. Samuel was the carver for the new clock tower at Leicester, for which the foundation stone was laid in 1868 and he appears in a photograph of the occasion. By 1871 the family had moved to the Leicestershire countryside at Kibworth Beauchamp, where Samuel described himself as an \"architectural sculptor\", employing 32 men and six apprentices. In January 1874 a notice appeared in the London Gazette reporting Samuel's bankruptcy but by 1881 the family was back in Leicester (at 73 Regent Street) and the firm was still working from premises between Queen Street and Southampton Street. He began to work for the architet J.H. Chamberlain, who was also born in Leicester but practised in Birmingham and was the architect of 'The Grove. Samuel died in 1887 but the firm was continued by his son Samuel junior, while his son Thomas continued as an 'artist sculptor'. \n\nAll we know of Samuel suggests that he was a carver, so the inlaid work on the panels of the room may have been undertaken by a specialist within his firm."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sycamore","id":"AAT12357"},{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"},{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"}],"techniques":[{"text":"marquetry","id":"AAT53853"},{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Panelling room, originally called the Ante Room, was designed by the architect, J.H. Chamberlain, for The Grove, Harborne, the house he rebuilt for William Kenrick, a local industrialist and M.P. The room was probably made in the workshop of Samuel Barfield, a skilled woodcarver who frequently worked for Chamberlain. Chamberlain, a keen collector of pottery and porcelain, displayed some of his collection in the room which was used as a route from the hall to the drawing room. \r\n\r\nBy 1911, when an Inventory was drawn up for William Kenrick, the room was called the Boudoir and the furniture, listed on page 20 of the Inventory, included a settee covered in plush with woven panels, two armchairs of different design with similar covers, a second settee, three tables and a stool. The corner of the room with the fireplace, door, part of the right hand wall and corner of the first settee are shown in a photograph of the Boudoir in the Inventory, page 16. The porcelain and pottery in the Boudoir are listed in the Inventory, pp. 40-43. The Inventory & Valuation was drawn up for Kenrick by Waring & Gillow Ltd in 1911 (original Birmingham City Archives MS 400/93). Two copies of this Inventory, one with illustrations, are in the relevant Buildings file, Information Section, Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion.\r\n\r\nIn 1962 John Hayward of the Department of Woodwork and Barbara Morris of the Department of Circulation were invited to inspect The Grove by Birmingham Museum as the house and grounds had been bequeathed to the City Council. The Ante-Room was removed by the Museum for display before the house was demolished. The room was installed in the Victorian Primary Gallery and opened to the public in June 1967.\n\nAn oak centre table (possibly with a later top), designed by Chamberlain for the hallway of The Grove and made by Collier & Plucknett, Warwick, was previously owned by The Fine Art Society and sold by Gorringe's, Lewes, East Sussex, 26 Sept. 2017, lot 591.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Panelled room from The Grove, Harborne, sycamore and oak, with inlay of walnut and other woods, designed by John Henry Chamberlain and made by Samuel Barfield, 1877-1878, England","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Reason For Production: Commission","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"floral patterns","id":"AAT10135"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"ROOM\r\nENGLISH: 1877\r\nDesigned by J.H.
