Matching sets, usually housed in a fitted case, remained in use for travellers until well into the 20th century.  \r\n\r\nThis set comes from the Ottoman Empire.  The Greek inscription on the case shows that it was probably made for a wealthy Greek, as were several others of the same general design from the first half of the 18th century.  The knife and fork, although probably dating from the same place and period, may not have been made for this case, as they are completely different in decoration and size.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9476"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CB013","id":"THES408634"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CB013","id":"THES408634"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"CB013","id":"THES408634"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fork","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"Case","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1707","earliest":"1702-01-01","latest":"1711-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought at Londesborough sale.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver cutlery set comprising a knife and fork with ivory and filligree handles in a niello case, Turkey, ca. 1707.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1388-1888","1388A-1888","1388B-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"1388","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Fork","knife (culinary tool)","Case"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-06-06","recordCreationDate":"2005-03-01","availableToBook":true}}
