In addition to photographing museum objects and objects on loan, he also photographed great works of art and architecture on dedicated photographic campaigns abroad. These views were made during a 1867 campagn to Spain and Portugal.\n\nThis is one of seven sets of Thurston Thompson's series of photographs of the Monastery of Batalha, Portugal in the V&A collection. The series was published shortly after his death by the Arundel Society, sanctioned by the Science and Art Department, (under the authority of which the V&A was originally established). Available to artists, amateurs and collectors, these volumes were also circulated by the Science and Art Department for the use of schools of art. \n\nOf these seven volumes, five are bound, the other two sets are composed of loose plates, with some additional plates not included in the bound volumes and marked as proofs. The various stamps and presentation formats demonstrate the multiple ways photographs were circulated not only throughout the museum, but to the larger community of scholars, artists and connoisseurs.","physicalDescription":"A sepia-coloured mounted photograph of an arched doorway of a church.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Thompson, Charles Thurston","id":"A7240"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"},{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Topography","id":"THES252988"},{"text":"Tourism & Travel","id":"THES250702"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"512M (VA)","id":"THES49774"},"free":"","case":"MX5","shelf":"XM","box":"85"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"albumen print","id":"AAT127121"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Batalha","id":"x45453"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1867","earliest":"1867-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"59589","id":"O1094940"},"association":"Duplicate"},{"object":{"text":"E.2239:3-1997","id":"O1072230"},"association":"Duplicate"},{"object":{"text":"E.2238:3-1997","id":"O1031583"},"association":"Duplicate"},{"object":{"text":"59609","id":"O1074448"},"association":"Duplicate"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"377","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"495","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"mount","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'MONASTERY OF BATALHA, PORTUGAL.
