It took over two years to complete, and Constable followed its development obsessively, insisting on repeated alterations to capture the rainbow’s ‘tender, elegant, evanescent and lovely’ quality. When Lucas fell ill, Constable oversaw the final preparations for its publication. However, the plate remained unpublished because of Constable’s continual changes. His final letter to Lucas, dated 29 March 1837, possibly the last note he ever wrote, expressed delight with ‘the bow’.
