Around 1730 ceramic handles were introduced to Europe from China. Although cutlers were required by their guilds to be able to make a complete knife, handles of carved ivory, silver, bronze and glass were usually imported or made by specialist craftsmen.\r\n\r\nPorcelain from China was so popular that European factories tried to imitate it. They could not immediately replicate the recipe for true Chinese porcelain (hard-paste), but devised substitutes known as 'soft-pastes'. Soft-paste factories at Bow and Chelsea produced ceramic knife handles in various patterns and styles from about 1750.","physicalDescription":"One of a set of six knives with a pistol-shaped handle made of soft-paste porcelain with painted enamel decoration and a silver ferrule.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Bow Porcelain Factory","id":"A1505"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Stammers","id":"A14118"},"association":{"text":"cutlers","id":"AAT236522"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10665"},{"text":"enamel paint","id":"AAT147678"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Soft paste porcelain, painted enamel, silver, steel","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AE3979","2006AJ9499"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"116 (VA)","id":"THES49908"},"free":"","case":"DR7","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES408978"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES334134"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"1","shelf":"5","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES408978"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES408978"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1756","earliest":"1756-01-01","latest":"1756-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca.1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Lt.
