A bundle of coloured glass rods, arranged so that the cross-section formed a pattern, was heated and stretched. When the bundle reached the required thickness, it was sliced and the slices were fused onto the metal.\r\n\r\nEbony, ivory, fish skin, tortoiseshell, amber, bone, horn and shell were popular for decorating cutlery. Around 1730 ceramic handles were introduced to Europe from China. Although cutlers were required by their guilds to be able to make a complete knife, handles of carved ivory, silver, bronze and glass were usually imported or made by specialist craftsmen.","physicalDescription":"Knife with a handle of millefiori glass and a silver ferrule.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"glass","id":"AAT207352"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Steel, with a handle of millefiori glass and a silver ferrule","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9482","2006AM1407"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"116","id":"THES49908"},"free":"","case":"DR7","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES408670"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1680-1720","earliest":"1680-01-01","latest":"1720-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"22.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Knife with a handle of millefiori glass and a silver ferrule, Venice, Italy, 1680-1720.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["1524A-1888","1524-1888"],"accessionNumberNum":"1524","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1888,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","knife (culinary tool) [1]","knife (culinary tool) [2]"],"assets":["2019LP8006","2019LV9572"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-06-09","recordCreationDate":"2005-02-04","availableToBook":false}}
