A male servant holds a parasol to shield the courtesan’s face, while she looks down at one of her two young female attendants. \r\n\r\nMasanobu was a print designer, painter and publisher of early <i>ukiyo-e</i>, or ‘pictures of the floating world’. His influence on the development of the genre cannot be overestimated. Among other achievements, he is credited with pioneering a craze for single-sheet portraits of famous beauties. The detailed rendering of dress and textiles in this print is characteristic of such pictures and reflects the fashion-conscious milieu in which Masanobu lived and worked.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Okumura Masanobu","id":"A14072"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodblock print","id":"x38448"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Monochrome print on paper from wood block","categories":[{"text":"Printed pages & sheets","id":"THES48904"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo (Japanese period)","id":"AAT106643"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2013GJ5554","2006AN6658"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES393899"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Ôban","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Arthur Morrison, accessioned in 1901.
