Lustrous black niello provides a strong contrast with the bright silver. Niello is a powdered mixture of black metal sulphides. It was pushed into the engraved lines and fused by heat. The surface was then polished.\r\n\r\nCutlers specialised in making blades. They trained as apprentices for up to seven years, working for a freeman cutler who housed and fed them. In England a cutler would have to prove himself as bladesmith and hafter (maker of handles) in order to obtain the freedom of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers, gain his own mark and set up his own business.\r\n\r\nMany cutlers acted as middlemen who bought blades from bladesmiths, handles from hafters and sheaths from sheathers. They assembled the cutlery themselves and sold them under their own names.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"iron","id":"AAT11002"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"niello","id":"AAT54022"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved silver and nielloed handles","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AJ9483","2006AE4018"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"116","id":"THES49908"},"free":"","case":"DR6","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"116","id":"THES49908"},"free":"","case":"DR6","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"knife (culinary tool)","id":""}],[{"text":"Fork","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1590-1600","earliest":"1590-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wedding knife and fork, silver and niello handles, The Netherlands, 1590-1600.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.612-1910","M.612A-1910"],"accessionNumberNum":"612","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1910,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","knife (culinary tool)","Fork"],"assets":["2019LR0220","2019LR5322","2019LW6566","2019LW3045"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2005-01-20","availableToBook":false}}
