On 25 November, 1890, it was stolen. A French import mark shows it was in France by 1893. By 1928 it belonged to Swiss collector Alfred Rütschi, and was sold as part of his collection at a Fisher auction in Lucerne in 1931 (lot 115). The successful bidder was Dr Walter Leo Hildburgh, V&A patron and donor, and he bequeathed it to the Museum on his death in 1955.\nIn the 1980s, the Spanish historian José Navarro Talegón identified the monstrance (then on display in the V&A's Church Plate galleries) as the item stolen in 1890; in 1999 the V&A received a formal letter about the theft from the Mayor of Toro, and delegates representing the Bishop of Zamora visited the Museum in 2004 to petition for its return. The V&A corroborated José Navarro Talegón’s findings and confirmed that the monstrance in the museum’s collection is the one that was stolen from the Spanish church in 1890. However, the monstrance falls under the provisions of the 1983 National Heritage Act, since Hildburgh had acquired the piece in good faith at auction and had passed legal ownership to the Museum on his death. The V&A therefore retains legal title to the object. In 2005 the V&A and the Bishopric of Zamora jointly reached a solution to enable the monstrance to be displayed in Toro, and the monstrance was placed on long-term loan in the treasury museum at Santa María La Mayor Collegiate Church.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver, Spain (Toro), assay master's mark of Pedro Gago, Toro, 1538, from the workshop of Juan Gago Díez.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Oman, Charles. The Golden Age of Hispanic Silver, 1400-1665.
