Taken together, they display something of the pomp and ceremony of court life at the end of the Choson dynasty (1392–1910). \r\n\r\nThe cap would have been worn with an apron and belt for the regular royal ancestral rites at the Royal Ancestral Shrine. It is known as a ‘chegwan’ or royal ancestral rites cap. In a Confucian society in which social status was strictly codified, its five thin gold stripes denoted the wearer’s rank.","physicalDescription":"Ceremonial court cap of black lacquered cardboard, with indentions of black lacquered cardboard in relief, and parcel-gilt, on a ground of stiffened black silk gauze; the covering piece is also of stiffened black silk gauze, to which are stuck thin gilt cords. The pattern in relief consists of Chinese 'phoenixes' (<i>feng-huang</i>) and floral ornament.
