He was clockmaker to Louis XV and continued to produce his finely engineered movements even after the French Revolution of 1789. In Paris at that time, the different trades were tightly controlled by the guild system and Robin did not make the wooden cases of his clocks. This case is stamped ‘B. LIEUTAUD’, the mark of the cabinetmaker Balthazar Lieutaud, who worked frequently with Robin. \r\n\r\nSeveral cases of this shape exist, each with slightly different decoration in marquetry and gilt bronze. Some show figures of Apollo and his chariot as the cresting decoration at the top. Others, like this one, use the figure of Father Time with his scythe. This clock would originally have been slightly higher, with a low plinth section below the base.","physicalDescription":"Calendar equation regulator (régulateur), the case veneered in tulipwood and other woods on a carcase of oak, the front face of the base with a panel of lozenge marquetry, the case mounted with gilt-bronze mounts, including the figure of Time, with his scythe, as a cresting. The dial and dial plate are marked 'Robin a Paris' and the case is stamped four times with the stamp B.LIEUTAUD. The clock is missing its base, but a replacement base was made by the Museum in 2015, for display.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Robin, Robert","id":"A13994"},"association":{"text":"clockmaker","id":"AAT25397"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Lieutaud, Balthazar","id":"A13995"},"association":{"text":"cabinet-maker","id":"AAT25370"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"tulipwood","id":"AAT12469"},{"text":"gilt bronze","id":"x35084"},{"text":"steel","id":"AAT133751"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"clockmaking","id":"x38728"},{"text":"cabinet making","id":"AAT53607"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53790"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Tulipwood and other woods on a carcase of oak, set with a marquetry panel and with gilt-bronze mounts; the movement of steel and brass; the dial enamelled black on white","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Clocks & Watches","id":"THES48976"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AM7465","2016HY7770","2016HY7769","2016HY7771","2010EE0263","2010EE0262","2010EE0261","2010EB1102","2010EB1068","2010EB1067","2010EB1049","2010EB1048","2010EB1047","2006AM7464","2006AM7463","2006AM7461","2006AM2298","2006AM2297","2006AM2293","2006AM2290","2006AM2289","2006AM2288","2006AM2287","2006AM2285","2006AM2283","2006AM2282","2006AM2280","2006AM5445","2006AM5446","2019LY0909"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"1","id":"THES263059"},"free":"","case":"PL1","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"1","id":"THES263059"},"free":"","case":"PL1","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"FWK3","id":"THES49462"},"free":"","case":"KEYS","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"FWK3","id":"THES49462"},"free":"","case":"KEYS","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"1","id":"THES263059"},"free":"","case":"PL1","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"1","id":"THES263059"},"free":"","case":"PL1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Key","id":""}],[{"text":"Longcase clock","id":""}],[{"text":"key","id":""}],[{"text":"Pendulum","id":""}],[{"text":"hood","id":""}],[{"text":"movement","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1770-1775","earliest":"1770-01-01","latest":"1775-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"NCOL.1-2015","id":"O1307597"},"association":"Plinth"}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2635","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"with figure","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"450","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"280","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"B.LIEUTAUD","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Stamped four times on the back of the clock case, the mark of the cabinet-maker.
