Today, he is best known for his large oil paintings of dramatic literary and historical scenes in the pre-Raphaelite style, but he started his career as an illustrator. His accomplished illustrative style can be seen in the drawings found in this sketchbook. The sketchbook is a record of his travels and ranges from watercolours of expansive landscapes to smaller, more intimate pencil studies, including holidaymakers at the beach. While the drawings in this sketchbook date from around 1877, it includes a study of a horse which appears to be related to large oil paintings that Dicksee produced much later in his career. It is strikingly similar to the horse he depicts first in The Two Crowns (1900) and then again, in La belle dame sans merci (1902).","physicalDescription":"Sketchbook containing drawings of landscape and architectural subjects, probably all, except that on p.3, made in England, and studies of figures, animals, trees, clouds, etc. The only places identified by name are \"Robins Bay\" [?
