They are among her earliest known works. At the age of 12 Kate Greenaway had enrolled as a full-time student at the Finsbury School of Art where she studied for 6 years, completing the 23-stage National Course of Art Instruction initiated by Henry Cole. She submitted these designs, together with the botanical studies on which they are based for the 22nd stage of the course, winning an honourable mention. The piece follows the principals of the botanist and designer Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) who lectured at the South Kensington School from 1854-1868. Dresser advocated stylised plant ornamentation that was based on a detailed study of plant forms through botanical drawings.","physicalDescription":"Two dodecagonal shaped ornamental designs in watercolour with drawings of flowers and leaves in pencil.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Greenaway, Kate","id":"A8451"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB1355"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"86","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1864","earliest":"1864-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.3614:1-2004","id":"O107813"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"32.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"47.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Honourable Mention National Competition'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed on a piece of paper stuck at the bottom."},{"content":"Artist's initials","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signed in pen and ink at bottom right corner."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Two dodecagonal ornamental designs in watercolour with pencil drawings of flowers and leaves, examination piece by Kate Greenaway, London, 1864.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hewitson, Madeline (Author)(Editor) Ribeyrol, Charlotte (Author)(Editor) Winterbottom, Matthew (Author)(Editor) Ashmolean Museum (Host institution) <u>Colour revolution: Victorian art, fashion & design</u> Oxford: Ashmolean Museum, 2023. 238 pages: illustrated.
