The industry was established at Tunbridge Wells in Kent and flourished throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. \n\nThe border of the lid and sides of this small box are decorated with veneered bands of Tunbridge ware. A small printed label affixed to the underside of the box bears the name and address of Edmund Nye. The technique involved drawing a design that was graphed into squares, which resembled the patterns of Berlin woolwork, on which they were often based. Each of these squares was assigned a colour, which was matched to different types of wood. Sticks of wood corresponding these squares were cut and glued together to form a block, the sticks so arranged that their ends recreated the pattern.
