book","titles":[],"summaryDescription":"This embroidery design and fabric sample book was probably made for customers to choose and order products, rather than for embroiderers to use as a working pattern book. \n\nProduced around 1916–20 by Nam-Quat, an established embroidery atelier in Bac Ninh, Vietnam, the book shows the range of products and designs offered by the firm. These included embroidered furnishings for bedrooms and salons, such as bedspreads, bolster covers, table and piano covers, curtains and screens.\n\nThe designs feature mainly floral subjects, including chrysanthemums, lotus, wisteria, roses, bamboo and iris, alongside birds and animals such as roosters, peacocks, pheasants and tigers, and mythical creatures including dragons and phoenixes.\n\nThe final page contains samples of Lyon silk satin in twelve colours available to customers. From around 1896, Vietnamese embroiderers increasingly used Lyon satin, imported from France, for their work.\n\nSeeking to expand its international market, Nam-Quat promoted its work through national and international exhibitions, where it received several awards. These included a silver medal at the Hanoi Exhibition in 1902–03, a gold medal at the Marseille Colonial Exhibition in 1906 and a silver medal at the Shanghai Exhibition in 1912.
