The projecting top is carved with bands of fret, dentil, astragal, fluted and leaf ornament. The cupboard has two doors, each surrounded by a band of fret ornament and decorated with a satyrs head in high relief within a fluted framework; between the doors is a male terminal figure, with an oval opening in the pedestal fitted with a sliding panel concealing the keyhole. The front of the drawer is carved with bands of guilloche ornament and flat floral scrollwork. The sides of the cupboard and drawer are ornamented in a similar manner to the front, except that the panels of the cupboard are plain. At the back under the cupboard are two panels carved with scrolled cartouches. The rooms are all on the ground floor of the house.' The inventory is numbered 1-329, with description and price, arranged by room; it was drawn up in early March 1895 by Thomas Armstrong (Director for Art 1881-98) and Caspar Purdon Clarke (Assistant Director and from 1896 Director of the Art Museum, later Director of the Metropolitan Museum, New York).\r\nLocated in the room marked E in an annotated sketch plan of the ground floor of Peyre's house, which apparently accompanied a letter dated 28/2/1895 from Armstrong to Major General Sir John Donnelly (secretary of the Science and Art Department).\n\nProbably listed as no. 49 'A dresser, straight-sided, open below; the frieze which crowns the top supported on tall Corinthian angle columns.
