Features in brown and sanguine, hatched diagonally with grey-blue and with white in the eyes, on a pale carnation ground; hair in strokes of dark brown with the lights in gouache, also over the carnation; cravat in white over a yellowish ground, modelled in grey; armour in brown wash, hatched with black and grey with white for the lights and yellow for the studs; background in ochre wash, washed over with raw umber and hatched with brown; on vellum put down on pasteboard. \n\n<u>Frame:</u> A nineteenth- or early twentieth-century copper-gilt locket; the convex back soldered to sides with three channels, the first narrow and vertical, the second and third broader and stepping inward to the bezel, which holds the nearly flat glass by its bevelled edges; the hanger of square-section wire with a central groove in tear-drop form, soldered directly to the top of the locket, with twin spirals of flat wire separate from the hanger, which each begin with a small reverse turn before entering six diminishing turns; below the hanger and spirals, the back of the case is engraved coarsely with a series of four loops filled in with a diaper pattern of lines, and below that, more finely, is a symmetrical arrangement of acanthus leaves around a pendulum.
