She won the silver medal at the Society of Arts in 1816 and registered to study at the Townley Gallery the following year alongside her brother and sister. Between 1817 and 1828, she exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. Barrow married in 1828 and became an aunt to Charles Dickens. It is possible that Dickens’ character ‘Miss La Creevy’, the miniature painter in Nicholas Nickleby, was a nod to Janet Barrow. Dickens' character sheds light on a growing body of women artists in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain who turned to miniature painting as a pathway to artistic acclaim and financial stability.","physicalDescription":"Portrait miniature on ivory of Emma Balguy in a ruffled dress holding a fan, inscribed with the date.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Janet Barrow","id":"AUTH319741"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour on ivory","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Dickens","id":"THES252981"},{"text":"Miniatures","id":"THES269968"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NU8637","2017JU4113"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"RMC","shelf":"4","box":"L"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"miniatures (paintings)","id":"AAT33936"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1827","earliest":"1827-01-01","latest":"1827-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss E Balguy","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"109","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"84","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary Catalogue of Miniatures in the Victoria and Albert Museum</i>, Emmett Microform, 1981.","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"1827","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Portrait miniatures were frequently exchanged between loved ones and family in Britain as tokens of affection and remembrance.
