Leigh, first married name Wheatley) was a British artist who worked mainly in miniature and botanical illustrations. She was a central figure in London’s eighteenth-century art world, both as an artist herself and as a model. Pope married the painter Francis Wheatley in 1786. By 1796, she was exhibiting her work at the Royal Academy, and she became an accomplished watercolour artist with illustrations for Samuel Curtis’ Botanical Magazine. In 1807, she married again, this time to the actor and painter Alexander Pope. Pope would continue to work as an artist and instructor. In 1835, Sir John Soane commissioned a watercolour by the artist. She died in 1838.
