Great Britain, ca. 1730-1740.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"The sitter has been identified as Edward Russell, 1st Lord Orford (1653–1727), as he bears similarities to known portraits of Lord Orford. He died in 1727, which would signify this pastel was made prior to his death. This is an early date for a pastel that has, in terms of style, been dated to the 1730s and 1740s. There are no records of Lord Orford ever travelling to Venice during his lifetime. Rosalba Carriera never went to England and painted all her English sitters in Venice. Consequently, the identity of the sitter is still contested. What can be said, is that the sitter was a foreigner, most likely English, who came to sit for Rosalba in Venice and that the portrait was sent from Venice abroad as attested by the presence of the Santino, a religious token tucked in the strainer of the pastel.
