In 1935 she met Reuben Mednikoff, an advertising artist 23 years her junior. They began a life-long collaboration in which they used Surrealist ‘automatic’ processes as methods of psychoanalytic experimentation. In this painting, Pailthorpe uses watercolour to create an abstract shape which she has worked up with ink based on the unconscious associations it triggered. Within the monstrous form, phallic images and breasts are visible. Babies and children’s toys have also been added with ink, reflecting the significance of childhood experience in Freudian psychoanalysis. This work was made in 1940, the year in which Pailthorpe and Mednikoff broke with the British Surrealist group and moved to North America to continue their research. ","physicalDescription":"Grey watercolour developed with ink. A monster composed of heavy, bulbous forms walks on five feet with boots on. The skin of the monster has a pattern resembling that of a giraffe. Within the monster’s body, phallic and breast-like images are visible. Emerging from the pattern, images of babies and children’s toys have been drawn with ink. Initalled and dated by the artist.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dr. Grace Pailthorpe","id":"AUTH320101"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"watercolour painting","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen, ink and grey paint drawing","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"Surrealism","id":"AAT21512"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017KD1599"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"PD","shelf":"331","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1941","earliest":"1941-01-01","latest":"1941-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"279","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"379","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"27.9 x 37.9 cm - Dimensions taken from departmental notes.
