When organised theatre emerged in Greece, animal impersonation was an important element in the plays, and, although its presence waned over the centuries, it continued in folklore and stubbornly clung on in entertainments such as the English pantomime or the Chinese Opera. \r\n\r\nFrederick Ashton's ballet La Fille mal gardée opens on a French farm, where the Cockerel and his four hens are scratching about in the yard - the stylized conventions of ballet easily accommodates both animal impersonations and the very real emotions portrayed by the human characters. \r\n\r\nAshton's choreography ingeniously suggests a cockerel's movements, but the costume has to suggest the shape and bulk of the bird without getting in the dancer's way. Foam padding ensures the lightness, and the 'wings' are attached loosely around the arms to ensure freedom of movement. The chosen fabrics suggest the sheen and gloss of the bird's feathers.","physicalDescription":"Costume for the Cockerel worn in Act I of La Fille mal gardée, Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1960","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lancaster, Osbert (Sir)","id":"A13684"},"association":{"text":"costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"feather","id":"AAT11809"},{"text":"sateen","id":"x30060"},{"text":"felt","id":"AAT14107"},{"text":"foam","id":"AAT14639"},{"text":"gauze","id":"AAT14083"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Feathers, sateen, felt, foam and gauze","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY1344","2009BY1371","2009BY1343","2009BY1342"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344289"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"dance costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"dance costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1960","earliest":"1960-01-01","latest":"1960-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"130","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"55","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Costume for the Cockerel, worn in Act I of Frederick Ashton's ballet La Fille mal gardée, first performed by the Royal Ballet at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on 28 January 1960.
