In the 1590s the centre of his activity was San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Another important work, done in 1633, is the altar frontal in S Moise, in Venice. It is his last work. Bacchus is the Roman god of wine (Greek equivalent is Dionysos).\n\nFiredogs or andirons were placed within the fireplace and would have been used to hold utensials which were required for tending the fire. Often, firedogs do not even appear on inventories, which indicates their status as standard household objects, not necessarily worthy of particular note.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Bronze statuette of Bacchus for an andiron. He stands, naked except for a girdle of vine leaves and grapes, his left foot forward, his right resting on a small barrel. His left hand is raised, holding a jug from which he is pouring wine into a (missing) cup held in his right hand. His head, crowned with vine leaves, is turned sharply to his left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Roccatagliata, Nicolò","id":"A13749"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"style of"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE5117","2006BF8908","2006BC9433","2006BC9432","2018KW8544","2018KW8542","2018KW8540"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES396215"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1590-ca. 1625","earliest":"1585-01-01","latest":"1629-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"of base"},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"5,445.8","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the Salting bequest in 1910.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, bronze, firedog figure of Bacchus, in the style of Nicolò Roccatagliata, Italy (Venice), ca. 1590-1625","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mariacher, Giovanni. <u>La Scultura del Cinquecento</u>.
