A plaster cast of it in the G.F. Watts Gallery, Compton, bears the inscription MICHEL PIU CHE MORTAL ANGELO DIVINO. In fact it is adapted with several variations from he bronze figure of 'Pluto' made for the Studiolo of Francesco I de'Medici in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence by Domenico Poggini in 1571, and in more recent years it has been several times published as a later variant version by Poggini from his model. The variations are, however, clearly the work of a modern hand, and there are comparable late variant versions of others of the Studiolo statuettes. Further casts in both bronze and lead are known, and the figure clearly at one time enjoyed great popularity.","physicalDescription":"Bronze statuette of David, adapted with several variations from the bronze figure of Pluto by Domenico Poggini in 1571. The figure, represented in the act of walking with the right leg advanced, is naked, save for a strap worn over the right shoulder and a band around the hair. His right forearm is raised and his left arm is held forward. The remains of an indistinguishable object appear in the right hand. His head is turned towards his left. On a shallow oval base cast in one with the figure.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Poggini, Domenico","id":"A22566"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2017KA5701","2017KA5725"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES397245"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statue","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"93.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"From the Salting bequest.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, bronze, of David / Pluto, adapted with variations after the Pluto by Domenico Poggini, Italy, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Maclagan, Eric and Longhurst, Margaret H. <u>Catalogue of Italian Sculpture.
