This panel depicts Christ Triumphant standing within a mandorla, holding in his right hand the Banner of the Resurrection and in his left, covered by his mantle, a book. It also shows all four beasts of Psalm 90, illustrated below the feet of Christ, the dragon, lion, asp and basilisk. This plaque is relatively thin and must have been made for a book cover and then torn from its setting. The particular image of the triumphant Christ, with the lion, dragon, asp and basilisk, has been shown by Philippe Verdier to derive from Late Roman imperial prototypes and have enjoyed a great popularity in the Carolingian and Romanesque periods. ","physicalDescription":"Carved ivory panel or devotional tablet depicting Christ standing within a mandorla and striding forward triumphantly, holding in his right hand the Banner of the Resurrection and in his left, covered by his mantle, a book. The drapery of his mantle billows out from behind his waist and from his left wrist. Beneath his feet are the lion, the dragon, the asp, and baselisk. The panel is surrounded by undulating foliage.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved elephant ivory","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Plaques & Plaquettes","id":"THES49031"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2013GA7610","2006AD3432","2013GA7612"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"023","id":"THES411294"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Northern Italy or South Germany"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"12th century","earliest":"1100-01-01","latest":"1199-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"REPRO.1873-123","id":"O1226897"},"association":"Reproduction"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"6.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"In the possession of John Webb, London, by 1862 (London 1862, cat. no. 53); purchased from Webb in 1867, for £7.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Panel, ivory, depicting Christ triumphant, Northern Italy or South Germany, probably twelfth century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects acquired in the Year 1867. <font -u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
