Referencing Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and St. Sebastian, the experimental tableaux provide an unusual and unique set of portraits of one of Japan's most controversial authors. Some of his books such as 'Confessions of a Mask' deal with gay eroticism and others deal with nationalistic themes. He died by the ritual suicide of seppuku in 1970 after a failed military coup to restore the Japanese Emperor.","physicalDescription":"Black and white photograph of Yukio Mishima smelling a rose","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"hosoe","id":"A15938"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin silver print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2241"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"941","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"20th century","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"print","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"54","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"print","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Currently framed in brown frame 657 x 835 x 32 mm.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"20thC; Hosoe Eikoh, Ordeal by Roses, no. 32, signed in bottom right-hand corner","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.1239-1980"],"accessionNumberNum":"1239","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":1980,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
