Neue Sachlichkeit advocated an approach to photography that assigns the role of impartial observer to the photographer. By embracing the camera’s ability to capture the real world in a clear, apparently objective matter, Renger-Patzch felt he was revealing the true, inherent beauty of his subjects. In 1928 he published ‘The World is Beautiful’, a book of 100 photographs of nature and industry taken in precision detail with great care to styling and lighting. \n\r\nThis photograph of beakers from the Schott Glassworks factory exemplifies Renger-Patzsch’s approach to photographing everyday objects. Here, industrial glass beakers are carefully arranged and lit to create a delicately composed image. This elevates the subject matter from something unremarkable to an exquisite still life, made pleasing through its perfect clarity and balance.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Photograph showing 8 glass beakers of differing sizes, sat on a reflective surface, against a featureless backdrop.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Albert Renger-Patzsch","id":"AUTH327621"},"association":{"text":"photographers","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelatin silver print.","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2013GJ3419"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"13.2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1934","earliest":"1934-01-01","latest":"1934-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"250","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"190","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Taken from Photography Department index card catalogue.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Albert Renger-Patzsch, 'Beakers', gelatin silver print, 1934.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.275-1982"],"accessionNumberNum":"275","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":1982,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
