He played an important role in the movement of 'Subjektive' or experimental photography, that originated in Germany in the 1950s around Otto Steinert. The photographers surrounding Steinert tried to revive a photography inspired by the likes of Moholy-Nagy, the Bauhaus and Man Ray. A founding member of<i> fotoform</i> in 1949, Reisewitz saw photography as ‘a blending of reality and fantasy’. \r\nThis photograph called 'Glockenzug' or 'Hanging the bells' is considered to be his masterpiece and was exhibited widely during the 1950s. It portrays an important moment of European history. To create munitions for the war bells of churches had been melt down. Reisewitz captures the new bells for the thirteenth-century Evangelical Stiftskirche in Neustadt, Rheinland-Pfalz, being raised. To create this photograph Reisewitz made a negative image of a photomontage. He blends together two photographs that he took ten minutes apart. To produce his final negative enlargement, he then placed the two negatives side by side. In this way, he created a picture capturing a space where reality and imagination meet.","physicalDescription":"Black and white negative image of a photomontage, showing the hanging of two bells in front of a huge church fassade, surrounded by smaller houses and a crowd of people.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Reisewitz, Wolfgang (Prof.)","id":"AUTH351366"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gelatin silver process","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gelating silver print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AR9158"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"984","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1949","earliest":"1949-01-01","latest":"1949-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"38","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from Roger Mayne in 1985.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wolfgang Reisewitz, Glockenzug, 1949, gelatin silver print","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mark Haworth-Booth (ed.), Photography: an Independent Art - Photographs from the Victoria and Albert Museum 1839-1996, Victoria and Albert Museum/Princeton University Press, 1997\r\n"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.309-1985"],"accessionNumberNum":"309","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":1985,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
